artist statement
The various forms which my work has assumed have all emerged from meditations of some description: many on the contours of memory and its nature, and explorations of the creative process as it relates to centering practices that cultivate an awareness of our ecological and spiritual aspects.
For some time, I have been interested in the retrieval, both treacherous and poetic, of consciousness and history. Within this context, my work has explored the meaning of text and language, particularly the issue of when a text becomes "obsolete" or irrelevant to the historical moment, and how the subsequent implications may be expressed physically.
My work investigates the re-collection of fragments, the retrieval and reconstruction of materials that have been cast off in some way, and more recently, the idea of stewardship for the earth, and the poetic and powerful implications of our animal aspect. I am drawn to simple materials such as wood, paper, fibers, books, clothing, and the particulars of a given space, and am interested in working through the memories and histories that they contain. Utilizing the processes inherent to sculpture, installation, drawing, video, and photography, I take a minimalist approach to my interventions, with an interest in emphasizing the intrinsic poetic properties of the materials at hand. I maintain an interdisciplinary posture toward the work, drawing upon a close affiliation with phenomenological, psychological, existential, spiritual and literary influences.
I am an Atlanta native and am currently living and working in Pittsburgh.
